Learning

At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that the development of skills in literacy and numeracy is the building block for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.

What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

Our subjects
Explore how we teach the NSW curriculum through key learning areas. Students from Year 9 - 12 access the curriculum through Sydney Distance Education High School, which is facilitated on-site, right here at Ajuga.
InitiaLit
InitiaLit is a targeted literacy program run across the Junior School cohort at Ajuga, using a phonics-based, explicit teaching approach delivered in intensive, small-group sessions. By moving students into focused literacy groups, InitiaLit provides personalised support tailored to each learner’s needs, helping to accelerate their reading and writing skills. This evidence-based program builds a strong foundation in literacy while boosting students’ confidence and academic success.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (Duke of Ed)
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an exciting program offered to our senior cohort, fully embedded within the school timetable at Ajuga. It provides students with opportunities to develop new skills, engage in physical activities, and contribute to their community through meaningful challenges. This award fosters personal growth, resilience, and leadership, preparing students for life beyond school.
Environmental Education
Environmental Education at Ajuga School, enriched by our partnership with Georges River Environmental Education Centre, offers students weekly sustainability sessions where they actively engage as citizen scientists. Through projects like developing one of Australia's first EarthWatch-supported Tiny Forests and earning EcoSchool Green Flags, our students learn the importance of caring for the environment. These programs not only promote environmental stewardship but also support student well-being by fostering connection to nature, responsibility, and a sense of purpose.
Baseline Cafe
Baseline Cafe began as a student-led social enterprise raising funds for their chosen charity, and it has since evolved into a vibrant learning space where students develop practical skills. Here, students gain hands-on experience in barista techniques, money handling, and customer service, preparing them for future employment and everyday life. Through running the cafe, they build confidence, teamwork, and communication skills in a real-world setting while contributing positively to their community.
Critical Core
Critical Core is an innovative tabletop role-playing program led by Andrew at Ajuga School, designed to support children with autism. Through engaging, story-based game sessions, students develop social skills, problem-solving abilities, and emotional regulation in a safe and supportive environment. This creative intervention fosters communication, collaboration, and confidence, helping students navigate real-life challenges more effectively.

There are no special religious education and special education in ethics approved providers available at this school.
